The 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings caused several states and cities to pass strict gun control measures. In response, state lawmakers in gun friendly states in the South and West passed bills that would strengthen Stand Your Ground laws and allow weapons in most public places. In 2014, 21 states passed laws that expanded the rights of gun owners allowing them to possess firearms in churches, bars, schools and college campuses. The federal government has not passed any gun control measures since the 1994 Brady Bill and 42 states now allow the possession of assault rifles. In the U.S. two-thirds of all gun deaths are suicides and in 2010 there were 19,000 firearm suicides and 11,000 firearm homicides.

No, restrictions on purchasing do nothing but affect responsible gun owners, increase penalties for irresponsible use and ownership and maintain checkups on those licensed to ensure compliance.
@9KY87751yr1Y
No. Legal gun owners should face no penalties while we should be controlling of the flow of guns through the Canadian-American border.
@B4GS7ZQ1wk1W
If a person has a gun license and uses it properly then there's no issue so no it shouldn't be banned.
@B486XBX3wks3W
No if we only properly enforced the current laws and addressed illegal guns we would be golden. Our current processes are quite restrictive already
@B43QV9M4wks4W
Keep as is, however we need to fortify our border against American weapons. All of our illegal or criminal weapons come from the USA same with the cartels in mexico - those are american weapons.
@B3VQVNZ1mo1MO
No. Our current firearms laws make no sense and they should be completely worked over to be less restrictive. The current system does a good job for firearms safety but then goes and arbitrarily bans thousands of models. The people who designed these laws have no idea how firearms work outside of what they see in hollywood action movies.
@B3B3PBG2mos2MO
No, the current restrictions are fine. Guns should be allowed for hunting but there is no need to have a gun on your person in daily life.
@B36RQXT2mos2MO
I feel as if we should lessen the restrictions but the mentally ill and criminals shouldn't be allowed to purchase a gun and the penalties and charges with firearms should be worse
@B2Q2MBV3mos3MO
thanks to Trudeau we can't even have half the guns since of the restrictions were made. including if a home invasion happened we can't defend ourself's instead we would have to wait for police that have the guns to do so, but they might be too late before they arrive.
@B2H27FG3mos3MO
NO, and the current process should be shredded and redone BY those with a brain. Hunters, Gun Trainers, Those who practice, and live by common sense. There should be a gun committee that makes the regulations. Our government is punishing hunters and collectors. Regular everyday citizens that like target practice..
@B2DQSLR 3mos3MO
Yes, ban public gun use and you may only own a gun after obtaining a required licence obtained through extensive tests and training
@9TYMGRVIndependent7mos7MO
I think there should be a backround check for any criminal activities or anything that involves the person doing something bad with a gun, and a psychological test should be instigated.
@9TT5LZ57mos7MO
no but only proper guns should be sold to the right people with a licsence and a safe place for the gun
@9TMRHV8Conservative7mos7MO
gun use and purchase does not need to be strictly forbidden but it might be a good idea to add more restrictions or background checks when selling one. Guns and self defense weapons are still an essential in your home but should have more restrictions
@9T3T4F77mos7MO
There should be relaxed gun laws on carrying rights, however the restrictions on acquiring a hand gun, and banning assault weapons should stay the same.
No, but yes if with added restrictions concealed and open carry are discussed, and stand your ground laws are passed.
@9MKYKGX11mos11MO
No, only for convicted criminals and the mentally ill. Also increase penalties for gun-related crimes, and the government should pass a national "stand your ground" law. The PAL system should be abolished and concealed carry of handguns should be legalized.
@9MKYHZ711mos11MO
Yes, but gun laws in Canada should be reformed so that having a gun at home for self defense is allowed
@9F6YRJ82yrs2Y
No, but if the person purchasing a gun has a criminal record, yes
@965DR5M3yrs3Y
i think it is good how it is
@B49LKNY3wks3W
the system we have now works well, and you politic people tend to look down at our southern neighbor and get scared, when most gun crime is unrgistered gun owners, who shouldnt even have a gun. we should aslo make it so we arent banning guns and making it so we cant hand down our guns to legal owners, because boating accidents are becoming sadly too common
@9ZZKZXPConservative4mos4MO
please let me buy hand guns again they are soo cool and i love shooting them i love them soo much and they are helpfull for defending your home.
@9YBBS3W5mos5MO
No there should be less gun restrictions because it only punishes responsible gun owners the only restrictions should be no guns whatsoever for the mentally ill and criminals and there should be an increase penalties for gun-related crimes.
@9VJLT3Z6mos6MO
No, and there should be a repeal on owning handguns, and only people with criminal records should be barred from usual gun ownership.
@9T7P6SD7mos7MO
No, But the government should increase background checks and the fines or penalties for intentional gun related crime. Canada should focus on stopping illegal gun purchasing and enforce border checks for some illegal firearms that may get in that way. We should not be punishing hunters and other legal gun users for gun related crimes comitted by other people.
@9L2SXDR1yr1Y
This should be tailored to what time of gun-related violence we see in the country, and maybe that should be by province. More individual crimes? Crack down on gun licencing checks. More organized crime? Go harder on punishment or funding special police organizations to cut off group crime lines of trade. I do not, however, think that we should scale back our current gun laws at all. They just need a tweak when and where necessary.
@9KNX3BB1yr1Y
Yes, we should require background checks, training, and psych tests, but we should allow any non-automatic firearms to be legal for those who pass the checks
@9KM3HYPConservative1yr1Y
Restrict who can buy a gun, but dont ban them, also the gun show loophole was never a thing in canada.
@9JT265B1yr1Y
no, only for the criminals & mentally ill, increase penalties for gun - related crimes, & add a "stand your ground" law
@9JN3LGRConservative1yr1Y
No, people should be able to buy and own any gun they wish unless they are a criminal or are mentally ill
@9HXL8D51yr1Y
People should not be allowed to buy military grade weapons or anything more powerful then what you would need to kill a big buck. There should also be more restrictions on criminals gaining weapons.
@9HT9NSYConservative1yr1Y
No, more resources should be allocated to federal, provincial, county, and city law enforcement to enforce the already existing laws, and Canada should implement some variation of Castle Doctrine
@9HCP7QV1yr1Y
No. Obtaining, possessing, and using firearms should be made easier. Criminals don’t care about the law, these restrictions only affect law abiding citizens. We should have the right to own firearms as well as castle laws.
@9H8BM7B1yr1Y
No, but semi-automatic rifles should be mostly banned, unless chambered in .22LR, handguns should be allowed for self defence
@9H7G7FJ1yr1Y
No, but increase penalties for gun-related crimes No, but increase penalties for gun-related crimes
@9GVKBFK1yr1Y
Yes, anyone with a criminal history can not own or be in the possession of a gun and no one may own or posses a military weapon
@9GKG4PB1yr1Y
Every citizen should have the right to own guns, revoke, restrict or suspend fire arms license when criminally chathed with weapons violations.
@9GH2KFF1yr1Y
Yes. Only white people who have been a citizen for over 10 years and are over 18 should be allowed to own a firearm.
@9G6BWXGConservative2yrs2Y
no, but guns should be aloud in public places loaded with ammo unless they are at a gun range, and ther should be high tickets if they break this law
@9FW2P262yrs2Y
No, but there should be a very strict process to get the license and guns. There should be strict training required if you want a license but after getting that it should not be that hard. Any criminal would probably not go through that much just to get a gun legally so they can do illegal activities.
Guns shouldn't be a privilege, everyone should own a gun to defend themselves from government tyranny.
@9FPG8CX2yrs2Y
No. Many of gun restrictions are fine, but some aspects of it are a bit too strict especially for hunters, which means some regulations needs reductions.
only gun for mentally ill
@9FK5WD92yrs2Y
Yes, but simultaneously eliminate all gun bans
@9FJHRQW2yrs2Y
guns are how most people get there food from hunting, but i do not stand for people how kill with guns its not ok.
@9FHB5XK2yrs2Y
if you are legal age to buy one and have no criminal chargers under a certain level then let them a buy a gun.
@9FH88C62yrs2Y
I think if you have an criminal record your not allowed to buy a gun.
@9FGBYPB2yrs2Y
I think if they have a criminal record they shouldn’t.
@9FG4N272yrs2Y
unban all guns and laws to guns
@9F9YT9G2yrs2Y
Thorough background checks and training while targeting the illegal gun trade
@9F9SY9W2yrs2Y
No, enforce the need of requiring a PAL to buy a gun with ammunition and not allow people with previous bad criminal records and people who may be mentally or physically ill that doesn't allow them to control their own body (i.e. Schizophrenia, Cerebral Palsy, Tourettes ETC.)
@9F9S33M2yrs2Y
remove the laws on handguns gang
@9F7WQT3Conservative2yrs2Y
God bless America and Donald Trump come lead are country Trump
@9F5KMPV2yrs2Y
Guns should be for hunting and sport. People who buy guns should go through mental health testing to make sure they are stable and not at risk of going crazy. It would be unconstitutional to ban guns. Everyone who is mentally sound should be able to own a gun. Guns should be primarily for hunting or sport though.
@9F4HF392yrs2Y
Guns should not be used in urban environments for means of self defence
@9F4F3D92yrs2Y
No, yet increase penalties for gun related crimes and screen those who purchase firearms for dangerous history
@8SDX9RWConservative4yrs4Y
No, but make stricer lock up laws
The restrictions are perfectly fine. Something like 95+% of gun crime is committed with illegally imported firearms and the majority of the other 5% is committed with stolen firearms. Gun owners are background checked every day (veterans are checked twice a day), and lose their license if they commit a crime. Many of the recent bans on firearms were banning military-exclusive weapons from public use, which caused lots of panic when people thought regular citizens could own anti-aircraft weaponry for example.
@96HRZF5Rhinoceros3yrs3Y
Compulsory concealed carry for women, with mandatory shooting classes for high school girls. It should be impossible for a straight man to get a gun.
@96FCYNK3yrs3Y
make guns legal for all in canada
@964QPWVConservative3yrs3Y
No, and make gun access easier for all Canadian Citizens
@95N7VRR3yrs3Y
Yes, it should go through a strict process to ensure that a gun isn’t just accessible to just anyone.
@95MZCG73yrs3Y
i believe guns should only be sold for hunting
@95MY8TF3yrs3Y
@95M7TJD3yrs3Y
i think we should all have the freedom to bear arms, but make extensive training a must, along with backround checks going back to around middle school
@95LYHDX3yrs3Y
requires strict checks, and only pistols and semis but, no full auto. And semis only for hunting and police.
@95LS6K73yrs3Y
@94R286C3yrs3Y
yes no more guns at walmart
@9393Z773yrs3Y
The government should be more careful about the purchase of guns, by creating a system to help with determining weather someone should be aloud to purchase and use the gun.
@936KWVL3yrs3Y
Canada should have their equivalent of the 2nd Amendment in the constitution. Gun rights are human rights
@936JP883yrs3Y
it should be a thing because we all want to live a peaceful world without anyone being harmed.
Nothing less than a Canadian equivalent of the Second Amendment will do
@92M8FFH3yrs3Y
No, since the majority of the crimes we are seeing are not tied back to legally acquired firearms. Case and point, the tragedy in Nova Scotia. Most recent report into how the gunman got the fire arms was through a friend smuggling them in through the states when he didn't have a PAL. We should be looking into cracking down on flow of illegal firearms into Canada first before we look at changing purchasing rules. The recent gun violence we are seeing can also be viewed as a symptom of larger societal problems that simply changing restrictions on the purchasing of firearms won't address and will windup delaying an effective solution.
@8ZFVK9G3yrs3Y
i should be able ti buy whatever i want
@8ZCY46ZNew Democratic3yrs3Y
The laws we have are fine
@8YX98K53yrs3Y
@8XYZS8Y3yrs3Y
I think for criminals, mentally ill, and anybody purchasing assault weapons there should absolutely be restrictions, but for anybody else it's should be more-so okay
@8WCVWGPConservative4yrs4Y
Only if you have not commited any violent crimes ao any terrist or have any terrist connections
@8VYZLVY4yrs4Y
In Canada, It is extremely difficult to get a firearm already. More restrictions do nothing because if a criminal is going to get a gun, they aren't going to get one legally.
@8VYGYCP4yrs4Y
Depends, if they have a criminal record within the past 5 years. If so, make it harder
@8VW89C9New Democratic4yrs4Y
Yes, add background checks for gun owners and a requirement that they must hold a certification that they can use the weapons safely.
@8VW3BPW4yrs4Y
ban hand guns. no restrictions or regulation for single action rifles or double/singe barrel shotguns. regulate and register semi auto rifles
@8VVL23S4yrs4Y
Less restrictions, more funding towards education and strict rules on individuals deemed unsuitable to have firearms
@8VTJ9SK4yrs4Y
No, only for criminals and the mentally ill and, but increase penalties for gun-related crimes
@8VST53W4yrs4Y
Yes, require strict background checks, psychological testing, and training, and also ban assault weapons
@8VR98WR4yrs4Y
No we should use smart guns
@8VR79MX4yrs4Y
No, but close loopholes being able to bring guns into the country
@8VQCY8P4yrs4Y
I believe Canada should have "castle laws",and anybody should be able to own any gun besides mentally ill,and people with previous gun related violence
@8VNXV4P4yrs4Y
There should be a little more of a restriction
@8VKY2544yrs4Y
Guns should only be in use for hunting
@8VM6NRB4yrs4Y
lose restrictions on all weapons and bring in strong penalties for gun-related crimes and heavy restrictions for the mentally ill and criminals.
@8VLC4MF4yrs4Y
Some people shouldn't if they have a crime on there record. Not like a small crime I mean like a robbery or a hostage or murder.
@8VL8R754yrs4Y
Remove all weapon laws period. If it isn't a torture method, it should be legal
@8VL3PP44yrs4Y
no, because some people rely on their guns for hunting, that's how some families get their food
@8VKGLC84yrs4Y
yes, ban all guns from public use and require strict background checks, psychological testing and training
