Something like 95+% of gun crime is committed with illegally imported firearms and the majority of the other 5% is committed with stolen firearms. Gun owners are background checked every day (veterans are checked twice a day), and lose their license if they commit a crime. Many of the recent bans on firearms were banning military-exclusive weapons from public use, which caused lots of panic when people thought regular citizens could own anti-aircraft weaponry for example.
