In January 2015, the Canadian government introduced Bill C-51 which would give police and spy agencies more power to detain terror suspects. Provisions to the bill include expanding police powers that would allow them to preventively detain or restrict terror suspects, ban the “promotion of terrorism”, allow the public safety minister to add people to Canada’s “no-fly list”, and enhance the powers of Canada’s spy agency CSIS. Proponents argue that law enforcement and intelligence agencies need more power to combat terrorism in the wake of the attacks on…

No, the complete disregard which Bill C-51 displays for civil rights in the interest of averting 'terrorism' is an egregious example of self-fulfilling prophecy.
@484BL624yrs4Y
Make something like the CIA.
@9ZZNB4NConservative4mos4MO
I am a little torn about this question because of course I want myself and all of Canada protected from terrorism but there needs to be policies in place that protect Canadians rights to privacy. The government cannot just spy on their citizens without actual evidence.
@4R4XY7N4yrs4Y
I do not support racial profiling and such (which is where many people would develop suspicion). As terrorism is increasing, I find it more important to support defence and preventive measures. The less fault we have is safest. Education is more important to support, and I am opposed to control at this chaotic time. Premature detaining would not stop extremist plans anyway, as I have noticed.
@B4CW2BS2wks2W
with regulations on protecting again discrimination like for example if your name sounds suspicious in the airport lines
@B45RNV83wks3W
Yes, but don't give them too much power that they feel they can do anything without any consequences.
@9MLXWMN11mos11MO
Needs more clarification. Given the recent developments, I'm all for strengthening police and intelligence capabilities.
@9MCJ3PYConservative11mos11MO
Yes but this policiy made a lot of people way more racist towards muslims and middle eastern communities
@9M3P8JH12mos12MO
Yes for intelligence agencies but if we allowed polices there might be police violence and power abuse
@9L57DMR1yr1Y
It’s a difficult question because I don’t want my privacy to be invaded but I don’t want any terrorism to happen
@9DHJR722yrs2Y
I need to read more on this subject
@9D7KWCW2yrs2Y
Yes but increase screening and training to get rid of individuals that use or will use their power for malicious purposes.
@8ZG9RK83yrs3Y
Don’t know enough to have an opinion
@8XXFQGW3yrs3Y
No, and abolish the Police
@8W49XXJ4yrs4Y
I need more information about this bill
@B3MHVY71mo1MO
I dont have enough knowledge of this subject to have a proper opinion, but from the sounds of the organization's plans and ideas i would say i support it.
@B397TW62mos2MO
Yes because I want that extra safety net, but also no because this could result in someone’s life being threatened and/or lost due to discrimination.
@9ZZ6GJW4mos4MO
As long as people's lives aren't monitered more than 50% of the time, it would be a safe bet to prevent potential terroist attacks.
@9ZNXRCY5mos5MO
I like the idea of the bill and what its trying to do, but without proper execution, this bill could start more problems
@9WGYK7R6mos6MO
police should be smarter and more nice to others no matter what they like or dislike and support the community of the lesbian and gay and other types i'm not one of them i just support them.
@9TP6Y527mos7MO
Yes, but not to a certain point. There just still be a point for arrests. It goes against Canada's values and our rights.
@9SR7BTC8mos8MO
i think we should protect our country from terrorism, but get rid of immagrints who want to build a new life
@9RTLWCPIndependent9mos9MO
Yes, I would support it, but it is a little too vague in some aspects, limit it to just intelligence agencies fighting terrorism, the local police shouldn't get involved with that. Provide more accountability. The bill needs more work
@9RBWNKL9mos9MO
Don’t have enough information on Bill C-51 to comment (and this kind of question sets it up as a “pro/con police” or “pro/con anti-terrorism” situation without context).
@9QQVM6K9mos9MO
yes, I agree that expanding local police and intelligence agencies' authority to prevent terrorism is important, but there should be more regulations on what that would involve and that the power is balanced.
@9JWMJCZ 1yr1Y
They should only do it when there's evidence about a terrorist attack is the only time they should expand local police and intelligence agencies' authority to prevent terrorism.
@9J9LDD5 1yr1Y
No, because it would make a way to accuse a certain group of people for terrorism when it is always done by others.
@9HCSTN21yr1Y
Yes, but the bill should be amended so that claims of terrorist activity are fully proven and that csis has absolute reasonable grounds and provable grounds to suspect someone of terrorism, and only with a permit or court order. Disrupting protests should also not be allowed.
@9H9QP5V1yr1Y
Depends on whose being highered and how they are planning to control terroism but yes for the most part.
@9H2DR3T1yr1Y
even if it is good to prevent terrorism i still feel the sense of not being in my own private space when I'm alone
@9GFVHJM1yr1Y
no because it bans certain firearms and they are not the problem the problem are the people using them and it also gives the government permission to censor stuff from us
@9FNVPPV2yrs2Y
Further intell is always helpful. Giving police too much power is not usually beneficial.
@9FL7SJ92yrs2Y
I believe that the bill has a great cause but it should have been more exact and if it risks the security of the people of Canada then it should not be done.
@9FKR42XConservative2yrs2Y
yes, but only to a certian extent because if they have to much power it will be abused for the lesser.
Not well informed enough on this
this is not imported to me
@9FFP25L2yrs2Y
Yes, but with limits, don't go overboard.
@9FD7JXT2yrs2Y
Dangerous to give to much power to local police.
@8TVZY624yrs4Y
Don’t know enough about it
@9CMNF9Y2yrs2Y
I feel like instead of assuming every muslim is a terriost look at people who accually look like teriost or do a crimnal background check
@9CLJFYR2yrs2Y
I am currently unsure of the specifics of what Bill C-51 allows so I cannot say at this time what my stance is.
@9C2536N2yrs2Y
It's not an issue in Canada I think so they can put money into it but not that much
@9BKGN7H2yrs2Y
It isn't even anti-terrorist it is used to monitor people
@96J58QJ3yrs3Y
Yes, but the bill isn’t specific on the accountability of the officers
@96HJ2SS3yrs3Y
only for dangerous and suspicious people who might be threats
@968J6P93yrs3Y
As long as they have an eye kept on them.
@95QPHP63yrs3Y
Not fully sure what the C-51 bill is about
@95QDFM3New Democratic3yrs3Y
I don't really know a lot about this Bill to answer this question
@95MW2DS3yrs3Y
@95CVK3R3yrs3Y
It depends. I think its okay if they have proof that this certain person might be involved in terrorism and not just dependent on their first and last name.
@95CVJ66Conservative3yrs3Y
No. I do not believe terrorism is a problem before.
@95CVC5D3yrs3Y
this could lead to racial profiling of which I don't agree with
@95CQ82J3yrs3Y
Police need to be retrained before you can add any more to a system, especially involving people of other culture
This could lead to a lot of racially profiling and people who don't support it.
@93XBNXB3yrs3Y
Yes and no, I am for the bill but it is to vague and invade privacy.
@93VNXBJ3yrs3Y
no, I think the powers of police should be expanded to prevent terrorism but not much so that the state would not slip toward police state.
@93THVTG3yrs3Y
Yes but only if there's proof to detain that person, if its judging based on how they look then no.
@93S89Q43yrs3Y
Yes, but only if there's proof to detain them, if its just because the way someone looks then no that is wrong.
@93RYJLP3yrs3Y
No, terrorism prevention should be up to the feds
@93RVS2J3yrs3Y
I say yes but at the same time it show that we are afraid of terrorism.
I don't understand what that is
@93RPFX53yrs3Y
Yes, as long as it's not racially motivated.
I'm worried racism may play a part in this, like they might target Muslims, islams, or Arabs.
@93Q9YT53yrs3Y
I do not support the provisions that support authority to gather intelligence, but I do support the amendments related to sexual assault.
@939CGKF3yrs3Y
Yes, but Bill C-51 needs an adjustment regarding accountability
@93729NH3yrs3Y
Yes, but only when local police and intelligence agencies' are proven not to be discriminatory and/or racist.
@933T6Q93yrs3Y
Yes as long as it is not terrorism to Canadians.. Ie Canadians were called Terrrorist by Trudeau for standing up for our rights in Ottawa..
@933BQJR3yrs3Y
this should be heavily monitored because it may lead to racism
@9327BFN3yrs3Y
This bill is necessary but not to be used in the way it is now (disproportionately affects Middle Easterns with racism and prejudice)
@92FG9XQ3yrs3Y
yes but detaining suspects preemptively should require authorization from multiple government officials and convincing proof with sever penalties for detaining an innocent person.
@926XCDD3yrs3Y
if they don't over do it and make it racist then yes
@92356M73yrs3Y
I am uncertain about this issue.
100% ACAB. "terrorism" is not going to be where these agencies look. They are swamped with racists and this incentive will only harm marginalised groups and benefit those in power. The police and intelligence agencies have always been pets for the wealthy.
@8ZN6B9X3yrs3Y
Do they know if i watch porn or not?
@8ZMM6QQ3yrs3Y
Don’t really know a lot about that
I don't really support it as much just because we won't get our own privacy back but at the same time, it's for the best to prevent crime so Overall as long as the expansion isn't too big then I'm fine with that.
No, only let them expand a small amount
@8ZBS5B83yrs3Y
They should just do what they need to do to keep things under control.
@8ZBLKX93yrs3Y
No, I don't support how they determine terror suspects by racial profiling.
@8ZBB68K3yrs3Y
No, it’s unnecessary spending and it could possibly lead to a police state
@8Z8FH2R3yrs3Y
Depending on how far they may take it i.e racism
@8YYK6BW3yrs3Y
I lack the knowledge to answer this.
@8YVSJMW3yrs3Y
Without invasion of privacy
@8YVJ4HK3yrs3Y
Yes, but proper infrastructure should be put into place for it’s employees and ALL levels of command/management should be vetted, go through extensive anti-discrimination and have a certain level of education. At the same time, these positions should not be life-long, they should be open for input from Canadians and how they feel, and changes should be made accordingly.
As long as they don't use the information collected to discriminate against ordinary citizens.
@8YB8J6N3yrs3Y
Yes but only if there are conditions to prevent its abuse and guarantees that it doesn't violate the Charter of Rights and Freedoms
100% would be used as an excuse to spy on citizens.
@8Y8W43Q3yrs3Y
Yes but only if protesting and other forms of peaceful retaliation are not considered acts of terror.
@8XZ9L5B3yrs3Y
@8XYTKJ2New Democratic3yrs3Y
No, a lot of indigenous reasons on why I don't support C-51
@8XR2ZQN3yrs3Y
Yes, but only if they properly follow the Bill C-51, and if there isn't any abuse of power.
@8XM4D4X3yrs3Y
Yes, but this must be watched carefully by other authorities and must have feedback from the community.
@8XLPWNN3yrs3Y
only if its a good reason for them to be doing it
No, there is already very little terrorism in Canada
@8TVD7ZT4yrs4Y
No. Privacy is the most important aspect of a free society, and this bill limits that greatly.
@8TS8XVK4yrs4Y
As long as it does not step on my freedom
