Make sure all screening and restrictions related to owning a gun are sufficient to keep them out of the wrong hands, but those who have passed screening should be able to own any firearm they would like to.

In Canada, It is extremely difficult to get a firearm already. More restrictions do nothing because if a criminal is going to get a gun, they aren't going to get one legally.

Focus on illegal firearms, it is already difficult enough to get a gun in Canada anyways. I personally believe if the US adapted to our standards there would be less crime. Alternatively the could act on the information they have instead of wait for the tragedy to happen.
