We should offer more rehabilitation programs for prisoners. Destroying the lives of the criminal population is a waste of human capital. They should be retrained and socially conditioned to reintegrate into society. They should be monitored and checked in on when they leave. If they reoffend then harsher punishments should follow.
The punishment is the prison sentence: they have been deprived of their freedom. The punishment is that they are with us. The idea that people should rot in prison without being given a path to redemption if they so choose to is cruel.
We should be reforming prisoners into good citizens rather than punish them which leads to them re-offending.
