Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has vowed to place a two-year ban on foreign homebuyers if re-elected, in a bid to address housing affordability in Canada. The nation's housing market has soared during the coronavirus pandemic, up 16 percent year-over-year, according to the Canadian Real Estate Association (CREA). The Liberal Party is one of three major parties focused on this central issue.

@8VW4NXL4yrs4Y
Yes, and implement foreign buyer and vacancy taxes
@8VVNVTFConservative4yrs4Y
Yes, unless it will be their primary residence.
@8VL9XF94yrs4Y
Wealthy foreigners using Canadian real estate markets to park money in a way that effects prices for domestic buyers should be banned.
@8VW3WXR4yrs4Y
No, unless it is not their primary residence
@B4NX84L4 days4D
Foreigners should be allowed to buy a home to reside in only. They should also have to become a Canadian citizen to do so. Foreign ownership is driving up housing prices, making them unaffordable for local residents.
@B4NK5F75 days5D
If they have the $ and it doesn't affect the citizens who cannot afford to buy and they only buy the home they plan to reside in. Or if they rent it out at a reasonable cost.
@B4LP8N41wk1W
Foreigners should be permanently banned from buying homes in Canada unless it's their primary residence
@B4JKSWV1wk1W
If foreigner buys a house they should only allowed ownership of 49% the provincial government should own 51%
@B4GQ9Q7Independent2wks2W
You should have to show you will physically reside in the house for a minimum 6 months per year, and be forced to sell if you don't and have a prohibition from being in any way a buyer or investor for a set time
@B4D3XN22wks2W
Yes, as long as they do not own property in another country, and their home in Canada is their primary residence.
@B3TPDHT1mo1MO
Yes, until the housing crisis is resolved and then allow them to under strict policies that enrich Canada.
@B367BY42mos2MO
no, just stop the insane excess immigration and prioritize building homes and slowing cost increases.
@B2VCMN72mos2MO
Foreign home buyers should be allowed to buy primary residence. However, they should not be able to buy several ‘holiday homes’ especially in overpopulated resorts in Canada like Whistler. They should either not be allowed to purchase or be taxed at such a high rate that if they wanted to buy they would have to rent out to locals.
@B2RK7N62mos2MO
It depends on their situation and why they entered Canada in the first place. Do they have a criminal record? What is on the criminal record? I think they deserve a place to live, but I'm not gonna say they should buy immediately. Maybe they should be placed in a home and see if they will treat the home respectfully.
@B2JHF8K3mos3MO
As long as all the six families in the house on farm land are paying the normal all the normal taxes
@B24CJHX4mos4MO
Should be able to rent for the first two years then If they buy a house and live there, sure why not. But multiples houses and someone else living there, no.
@9W6MXFY6mos6MO
if they're buying a bunch at once, yes but if it's one then they're most likely just trying to have a place to live in
@9VYHHPBConservative6mos6MO
they should only rent for 2 years in case they move back to the country of origin or if they are only in Canada for studies
@9VT9JB3Conservative6mos6MO
Foreigners should not be able to buy un Canada, at least until the housing and rental prices come down for Canadians.
@9VJVW9H6mos6MO
We should eliminate all foreign investment in and corporate investment in buying single family homes and condos.
@9V2M6HS7mos7MO
Foreigners should be banned from buying houses in Canada for 2 years but if they are refugees they should have the right to buy a house
@9SNLZ3S8mos8MO
If Foreigners have primary status and don’t own multiple homes for the rent economy but actually live in their communities then they should be allowed to buy a home as any Canadian citizen can.
@9RDS9RZ9mos9MO
Yes unless they are moving here. And be limited to one per family. The house must be sold if they return home for an extended period of time.
@9RBNFB79mos9MO
They should be allowed to buy only a primary residence and potentially land for a small businesses if they spend more than 50% of the year in Canada.
@9MXJRLQ11mos11MO
In this current housing crisis, no citizen or non-citizen or corporation should be allowed to own multiple pieces of property zoned for housing.
@9LNDD2H12mos12MO
Foreign buyers should be barred from buying houses in Canada. Purchasing of house should only be available Canadian citizens.
@9L3WN3Z1yr1Y
There should be proof that those who are buying homes are intending to live and STAY in Canada for the foreseeable future and should not be able to buy a home as a second residence or to rent it out and homes should be reserved for those who want to live and stay in Canada.
@9KBFTYW 1yr1Y
Yes, there should be no wholly foreign entities allowed to own homes in Canada. Homes are for residents, not tourists or foreign corporations to make money.
i think it depends on what their citizenship status and their income is and if they have a permanent residence or a student visa then they should be allowed to buy houses
@9JLGXLF1yr1Y
I think foreigners should have zero rights in Canada. Because they are illegal so we should not support them.
@9JHLD6J1yr1Y
Rewording of the above; Yes, they should be banned except for cases where it is their primary residence (and this should be rigorously confirmed)
@9HV2FD51yr1Y
Foreigners should be banned until they become Permanent residents. They shall not use home for rental income and should not be able to flip home for profit.
@9FHG97Q2yrs2Y
@9FGLBQ52yrs2Y
Depends on who the foreigners persona in this country. If they are trustworthy than yes if not than no
@9F955RV2yrs2Y
Make it 5 years and we have a deal
@9F8FTKF2yrs2Y
No, not if it's their primary residence
@9DXWB742yrs2Y
Foreign buyers should be permanently banned, unless they are going through the process of becoming Canadian citizens
@9DX8XLN2yrs2Y
If you are legal in the country then no but if you are illegal then yes
@9DTTBXP2yrs2Y
Yes and it should be permanent
@9FN5KBZ2yrs2Y
Foreigners who plan to move into the country should not be banned, rather, foreigners who are using the Real Estate market with the goal of making a profit should not be allowed to purchase homes. (Ideally we would stop land ownership as a whole)
@9FN3FGX2yrs2Y
i think that foreigner's should be able to buy houses and other property once they have citizenship
@8VK76RC4yrs4Y
Only if they won't be living there
@99S7KGD2yrs2Y
Foreigners should be unable to buy homes in Canada if they are not a resident of Canada
@965GMBK3yrs3Y
No, only if they're living in it though
@95TDPWT3yrs3Y
Yes, but only if it's for business purposes (ex. Businesses that buy property to rent to employees or an individual purchasing properties to rent remotely)
@95SX3P23yrs3Y
No, but if the buyer is not going to live in or rent the house, then some limits need to be in place.
@95QL9WL3yrs3Y
They should be able to come if they can financially support themselves
@95Q3K823yrs3Y
No, if it will be their primary residence
@95L6G5B3yrs3Y
Only if their home country also band foreign ownership
@95K5YQG3yrs3Y
No, this is not well-thought out, and could only increase the rising cost of affordability for housing in Canada. Many immigrants/foreigners (non-permanent residents, diplomats, students, etc.) are all important to help fill labour shortages in areas that we need them most, but also can help be trained in schooling/volunteer through international humanitarian work, if we ban foreigners from buying homes, we are actively preventing our economy from getting access to potential residents and people who want to immigrate here.
@95GXWD73yrs3Y
Yes for investment property
If they can buy a home then they should be aloud to buy it
@94KFP923yrs3Y
Yes, but only if it is NOT their primary residence
@94C42JL3yrs3Y
This could go very wrong if done the wrong way. There are many people, who are not citizens, who contribute an immense amount of good to this country. Diplomats, ambassadors of foreign nations, non-permanent residents, NGOs, exchange students for both high-school and university, and many others. If we ban housing to them, we are making it harder for people to come here and experience the benefits of this nation, which can do wonders in making people appreciate all that Canada has to offer. I understand that this is about affordable housing, and making it more affordable for everyone, but if we make it so that people can't come here and be able to live here/become a potential citizen in the future, are we doing a disservice to people of this country? Possibly.
@945C4M23yrs3Y
Yes, but there has to be requirements. Are they wanting to gain citizenship? Are they a foreign exchange student studying with a visa? A non-permanent resident? Diplomat? If they meet one of these, they shouldn't be taxed because they're actually living here.
@93TWQWC3yrs3Y
Only banned from buying homes for profit. If it is for a primary residence, buying is fine.
@93KS3GS3yrs3Y
No, but foreign property owners should be limited in how many homes they can buy and should be heavily taxed whether the property is vacant or not. Foreign corporations should not be allowed to buy residential properties in Canada at all.
@93KM6NJ3yrs3Y
Yes, foreigners should not own land.
Yes, but permanently, not just two years.
No, implement a secondary residence ban instead
If they are a legal citizen they should be able to do whatever they want. If they are a permanent residence for less, then no.
@9393LCW3yrs3Y
Yes. Not just 2 years but more then that. Also make it a law that states they have to adjust the rent according to prevent them from charging an unacceptable amount.
@9368W6D3yrs3Y
Yes, but not if they are permanent residents or citizens
@92VF6P3New Democratic3yrs3Y

@92M8H7W3yrs3Y

@8Z5L4HV3yrs3Y
Only if they are going to stay and live in said home.

@8YWMBC63yrs3Y
Yes only if it’s a secondary residence
@8WMPBWQ4yrs4Y
They should be allowed to buy a primary residence, and only that.
@8WDFBB6New Democratic4yrs4Y

@8VVHQ4W4yrs4Y

@8VVBFDV4yrs4Y

@8VVB4W84yrs4Y
If they can do a back flip no
@8VTXN694yrs4Y
Make it 6 months, and implement a tax if it is not their primary residence.
@8VTKCGV4yrs4Y
spell your question i.e foreigners correctly
@8VTFWYZ4yrs4Y
Foreigners should not be able to buy homes in Canada
@8VSVK3J4yrs4Y
If your not a full time worker then yes
@8VSSD5K4yrs4Y
No, but they should crack down on foreign buyers creating creating higher housing prices just to make money.
@8VSRQB54yrs4Y
People who aren’t canadian citizens or permanent residences should not be allowed to buy homes in canada
@8VSKLD74yrs4Y
If they’re hard working individuals that have proven they’re doing well, then no.
@8VSJTSN4yrs4Y
No, they should pay more tax and have to live in it majority of the year
No, but they should have to pay higher taxes and contribute more to property tax
not if they are moving into it right away. They should have a limit for how long they can leave it vacant for.
@8VS9RGD4yrs4Y
Only Canadian citizens should be able to buy Canadian real estate
@8VS43864yrs4Y
Home owners should live in their homes from the start.
@8VS2WQ84yrs4Y
If they live in the country, they are allowed. If they use it as an investment property, no
@8VRYHVG4yrs4Y
No but there should be a decrease in foreign buyers
@8VRRJNG4yrs4Y
As long as it’s not for investment purposes
@8VRQSM64yrs4Y
They need to pay higher taxes
