Currently, Canada's electoral system is based on a "first past the post" system. The candidate with the most votes in a riding wins a seat in the House of Commons and represents that riding as its Member of Parliament. The Governor General asks the Members of Parliament to form a government, which is normally the party whose candidates have won the most seats; that party's leader generally becomes Prime Minister. An absolute majority of the electorate is not needed, and is rarely achieved. As a result, power has been held by either of two parties for most of Canada's history. The party whose candidates win the second largest number of seats becomes the Official Opposition.

Do the United States system.
@4HRLRNS4yrs4Y
It is bigoted to assume an individual will have different opinions based on skin colour or genitalia. It promotes segregation and should not be tolerated. Western countries are a melting pot and we should be proud of it.

I want the FPTP system gone and legislation put in for it to never, ever return as it stands for the opposite of democracy. Though, I'm still undecided on what I would like it to be replaced with. Of course, I want every vote to matter in a perfect world. But unfortunately evil people (as in, selfish people, who want create division, who want to take away basic human rights) exist and I firmly believe they should never be allowed to partake in voting decisions
@B4BG86M3wks3W
Each province should have the same number of seats, instead of allowing more densely populated areas to have more influence on whether parties win or lose
@B2HND793mos3MO
Switching to PR voting system could improve fairness and proper representation, but many new challenges will be faced like political instability and lower local representation.
@8V8LQD4New Democratic4yrs4Y
All votes should be counted and the party with the most votes after ALL have been counted should win.
@B293PLF3mos3MO
We do not need to be part of the British monarchy. I say more or less keep our system of government but without the head of state being a monarch and no need for a governor general representing them.
@9JC6BKV1yr1Y
No, but more equally distribute the weights by culture and community, not by population; allow for the most diverse possible outcomes without losing overall importance of the popular choice. Something like 66% popular vote should guarantee a result, regardless.
@9FJR2LX2yrs2Y
Have a rank based voting system.
Yes, but other reform is acceptable
No, switch from FPTP to STAR voting
@9QZCYDN9mos9MO
I think we should implement parts of it into our current system to make it more like a mixed-member compensatory system
@9LHLKDC1yr1Y
No, instead give all candidates running an equal amount of screentime and determine the winner based on 100% of the voters.
@9K6M4541yr1Y
This could get really unstable and corrupted quick as any other political system, only better used for parties themselves, not for the head of the state.
@9JWMJCZ 1yr1Y
Well mostly they should only be telling the truth about themselves and that's the whole truth by following the rules. They should not be telling lies or else it will lead to their entire elimination of becoming government.
@962Z6QWConservative3yrs3Y
Switch to the popular vote
@95YWBT93yrs3Y
Switch to something more directly democratic
@95LSVQV3yrs3Y
No, leave it as it is now
@95J9PCR3yrs3Y
Yes, but only if regional representation remains limited to local candidates.
@955C6273yrs3Y
No, we should use a ranked-based voting system.
@94K2WNC3yrs3Y
Switch to Mixed Member Proportional instead of full Proportional
@93TYLL53yrs3Y
Yes, for the Senate, NOT for the House
@93SSKKF3yrs3Y
@93B6FPP3yrs3Y

@8Z7DWC93yrs3Y
Yes and allow for recall elections
@8YRX8JV3yrs3Y
No, switch to a mixed-member proportional representation
@8YB6RMF3yrs3Y
I do not have enough information on this.
@8XXXYKS3yrs3Y
Government show create a Committee to investigate a beneficial voting system
@8XH6SN93yrs3Y
No, switch to a preferential system
@8XH5YCW3yrs3Y
No but first past the post is also a bad system
@8XGCGKHConservative3yrs3Y
Preferential voting. Rank each candidate 1-5 so each vote counts.
@8VVPWGC4yrs4Y
No, not until a professionally curated, unbias, promoted list of pros and cons is published on the government website, so citizens have a common legitimate source of information to make their own dicision when voting on this.
@8VV2P574yrs4Y
Yes, we should switch to a Mixed-Member Proportional Voting system
@8VR933S4yrs4Y
Add in rank choice voting for each citizen to have their top 3 candidates.
@8TTCLGB4yrs4Y
we should vote prime minister and our representative but get rid of party system and our rep should vote the way his/her constituents want him too. have small votes in riding for important subjects, so people tell rep how to vote not a party.
Maybe a different system all together
@8TRPMHX4yrs4Y
I am unsure at this moment/ don’t have enough information to formulate an opinion
@8T8PGV94yrs4Y
@8T452LX4yrs4Y
people need to earn the right to vote. the system should be proportional to that.
@8T452LX4yrs4Y
people need to earn the right to vote.
@8T2Y8DQNew Democratic4yrs4Y
I think the voting system should be a Direct Democracy
@8SHRW854yrs4Y
Alternatively, we could invest in technology to develop a direct democracy
@8SHRW854yrs4Y
Yes, but alternatively, we could invest in technology to develop a direct democracy
@8SH9LNK4yrs4Y
We should reform to ranked order.
@8SCRSMG4yrs4Y
Yes but with a open list format
@8S3NTLN4yrs4Y
switch to ranked voting system, for the election of the prime minister
@8RWBHS34yrs4Y
Yes and add instant runoff
I think you should be able to vote for who you want as your riding representative and be able to vote for who you want on a federal level.
@8RQFVPN4yrs4Y
They should have proportional representation in certain matters but not all
@8RJ5L744yrs4Y
Yes, and add instant runoff
@8R27PYN4yrs4Y
Make it a point system we’re winning a province gets a point all provinces equal
@8R26JKW4yrs4Y
Yes, and add instant runoff with mixed member proportional with rural-urban proportional
@8QZTFS34yrs4Y
A non political party semi-direct democracy. Citizens vote directly for their city federal representative and directly for their head of state or "prime minister". Special interest groups would fill the role of crowd sourcing for specific issues. The position/stances of each representative would be listed for constituents to transparently see what the candidates believe.
@8QKQFRP4yrs4Y
Yes, but instant runoff voting should be used in tandem with it.
@8QJ8LJP4yrs4Y
@8Q5CJW34yrs4Y
Yes and add instant runoff and allow coalitions and add another Deputy Prime Minister.
@8PYXCGL4yrs4Y
Yes, and add instant runoff and recall elections with ranked ballot/mixed member proportional representation.
@8PNRMDN4yrs4Y
I like the idea, but it does not work with our mp system.
@8PGYVF34yrs4Y
Create a second parliament with proportional representation, and keep the current parliament with the first past the post
@8PFRMCY4yrs4Y
Regardless, there should be a Prime Ministry of the top 3-5 elected candidates that work together
@8P4P98S4yrs4Y
Yes, with instant run-off and allow multi-party coalitions.
@8NZGK76Conservative4yrs4Y
Should be Mixed Preportional. Reduce # of ridings but it will keep local support in Rural areas. Add a small % of Seats based on perportional representation.
@8NW94WNConservative4yrs4Y
keep fptp. but change how many seats are allocated across the country. its no longer fair. toronto and quebec need LESS CONTROL of outcomes
@8NVZHNKLibertarian4yrs4Y
Prime Minister should be voted on separately.
@8KG75SD4yrs4Y
No, ranked order voting ensures that citizens can vote for who they want without having to resort to the "lesser of two evils" approach many employ today.
@8HDGVYC5yrs5Y
Yes, and include instant runoff and recall elections to remove unpopular heads of government.
@8DQ7DSF5yrs5Y
We should switch to Ranked Balloting, it would represent Canada's voters best.
@9CMDTGL2yrs2Y
Maybe, I think it would be helpful if we were to try different methods and then see what works best for us as a nation.
@9B8L5CV2yrs2Y
No, switch to ranked ballot or multiple option voting and allow for more than one representative to run under a party banner. (E.g. Allow more than one conversative, liberal etc... candidate to increase choices per parties)
@99TGX7V2yrs2Y
I think whoever gets the most votes overall should win.
@98HLJHB2yrs2Y
Switch to proportional representation or Score Voting
@97RN9NP2yrs2Y
They get like 3 people who are running for prime minister then they wait 1 month for example to get the votes in and the person with the most people win
No, and it should change to a rank-based system.
@97P4X7S2yrs2Y
@96JJRBT3yrs3Y
No, we should ranked-based voting.
@9693JXK3yrs3Y
Ranked choice voting system
@8WK5PPJ4yrs4Y
Yes, introduce mixed member proportional representation with ranked choice voting
@9CBKZDD2yrs2Y
Ranked ballot mixed member
@99BZWYD2yrs2Y
MMP would be more ideal, but FPTP has served us well.
@8ZT5SNW3yrs3Y
There are many voting issues that need to be addressed, not just the current system
@8ZSJL5B3yrs3Y
Yes, with instant runoff and recall elections.
@8ZR6F7T3yrs3Y
I prefer a ranked ballot system
@8WMTHTN4yrs4Y
Switch to preferential electoral system
@8WLRLTF4yrs4Y
Change to Preferential voting system
YES ABSOLUTELY! Ranked Single Transferable Vote is the best option!
@8W8DSDD4yrs4Y
Switch to liquid democracy
@8VJ93854yrs4Y
Switch to ranked choice system.
@8V95QN24yrs4Y
Yes and add instant runoff with a 4-Round system. 1 for East, 1 for Central, 1 for West and 1 for North Canada.
@8V8GV2L4yrs4Y
No, a new system altogether needs to be implemented, all current systems are to easily exploitable
@8V88N2G4yrs4Y
I don't have all the information needed to have an opinion on this matter
@8TZB3244yrs4Y
Each vote should be tallied. Whoever has the most votes wins. Not based on ridings.
@8TYT9YDConservative4yrs4Y
Popular vote should be more relevant than seats in House of Commons
@8TY2F6H4yrs4Y
We should be able to vote online using our sin# and participate in referendums
@8TWT6YM4yrs4Y
Yes, you should be able to elect Members of Parliament and the Prime Minister differently (e.g., I voted for a conservative MP in my riding but voted for a liberal PM) and it the final electees should represent what the country voted for
