Plastic straws contribute minimally to environmental harm—less than 0.025% of global plastic waste. Most ocean plastic comes from fishing gear and industrial sources, not straws. Meanwhile, paper straws often contain PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances), dubbed "forever chemicals," detected in 18 out of 20 paper straw brands in a 2023 Belgian study published in Food Additives & Contaminants. These toxins can leach into drinks, posing health risks like hormonal disruption. Plastic straws, inert and recyclable, don’t degrade into harmful substances during use. Bans are symbolic, not effective.
