Should the government regulate artificial intelligence (AI) to ensure ethical use?

They should make it illegal to use artificial intelligence for things that would negatively impact the common good but using it in school or at work to speed up progress could be considered unethical, but I believe it wouldn't impact the greater good and is okay.
