In the USA, a country similar to Canada, firearms are widely used for self defense, often not even requiring the actual use of the firearm, but the mere presence of a firearm is often enough to de-escalate a potentially violent encounter. When a criminal is faced with the possibility of being met with equal or greater force, they are going to reconsider engaging in violent and disenfranchising actions.
