They're probably right, because we're not the kind of people who can fix things

I would tell them to try contacting politicians or voting for a party that actually is trying to fix these things, or to participate in protests if that's their kind of thing. And also that just because them going green won't drastically change the environment, that doesn't mean it doesn't matter if they completely avoid doing anything.
