I think if we looked at how we lend money and what requirements need to be met to borrow money we could be helping lower income families buy homes. For example if you have been paying $1500 in rent for over a year and never missed a payment why can you not qualify for a home costing the same monthly amount.

Look at their qualifications and any other things that might stop them from preventing them to make more than that amount to make sure they are not taking advantage of this. Also consider the type of house that they are trying to purchase

No, but if you can afford rent consistently you should be able to qualify for the mortgage amount the rent would equal to.
