Do you support independent schools?
Independent schools are taxpayer funded K-12 schools that are managed by private companies. In 1994 Alberta became the first province to allow independent schools. There are 23 independent schools in Alberta and it remains the only province which enables them.

Yes, but support for independent school should be balanced with investments in public education to ensure that every student, regardless of income, has access to a quality education.
@B2GRGV52mos2MO
Independent school are okay but they should not be funded in any way by the government. They should be paid in full by those attending.
@B3H825K1wk1W
If parents want their child to go through private school, they should have to pay for it. It should go nowhere near tax payer money.
@B3BFDW82wks2W
Yes, but not at the expense of funding public schools. And while we're at it, how about we get rid of the Catholic school system.
@B37ZXR22wks2W
No, independent schools are known to alter/artificially inflate marks for students, quintessentially creating a "pay to play" system
@B364M343wks3W
Yes, but the parents/guardians of the student attending private schools should be the ones funding the school.
@B2WRHY44wks4W
As a tax payer I do not what to pay for both independent and public funded schools. I think independent schools can exist I just do not want to pay for them.
@Canadianpunk89 4wks4W
Yes I do. Every student's situation is different. For example, if the independent schools have better programs for kids with certain disabilities compared to what the public schools have, then by all means yes I do support them. I was once a kid with a learning disability so I understand.
@B2W3XZ2New Democratic1mo1MO
Yes but only if public education still has proper funding and children who can't afford private education still have good opportunities to graduate and be educated.
@B2VMYZP1mo1MO
Improve public systems and focus on a cohesive model of care for all students. Student success is more successful when it is a collaborative approach rather than a tiered system.
@B2VF4BF1mo1MO
Yes, but only because they can provide support for students that the public school is not currently able to provide for
Yes, as long as they are able to meet all curriculum expectations in high-quality environments without tuition
@B2BMK7B2mos2MO
Personally No, but they should remain legal, but require all private schools to be strictly non-profit.
@B2PLKLDNew Democratic1mo1MO
Ok to have as an option for people but need huge improvements on public schools, more staff and higher wages
@B2MXWGH1mo1MO
I do support independent schools as long as they are not funded by the government at all because people pay them to increase their education circular.
@B2FXBYQ2mos2MO
Yes because people need to learn some how, if you have the money to go to a privite school then you should if you want.
@B2C6CJZ2mos2MO
We should have both private and public schools. I also think the public sector should have a complete overhaul and teach actual life skills as well as better direct kids to a career path at a younger age
@B2BV4ZM2mos2MO
yes, not at the expense of funding public schools and still having a focus on improving public schools and educational workers and teachers wages.
@B2BMN292mos2MO
Private schools and public schools should have alignment in quality of education being imparted. If one wishes to enroll theirchildren in private school they can go ahead. But if one cannot afford -- they should be able to have an option to go to public school expecting the same standard of l
Outcome.
@B292M3P2mos2MO
We should have a fully funded public education system. If someone wants to seek a private education it should be completely funded by the user and seek zero public funding, but must still follow the rules of the canadian education system
@B27PJGNNew Democratic2mos2MO
Yes, only if their non profit and there should be more publicization of education than privatization.
@9ZP8TZL4mos4MO
I think Canada should adopt the charter school method where the schools are private but the kids have an intrinsic value. Rich or poor a price per head in funding from the government and force schools to compete for better education by drawing students.
@9H9QP5V1yr1Y
Yes, as-long as they are basing their education the same way, but I do believe independent and government owned schools should make equal a efforts to make learning a more comfortable and less stressful environment.
@9H6GJSN1yr1Y
I believe public schools are perfectly fine but due to the inequality, it would be more beneficial if they could be more available to all individuals to receive a good level of education.
I don't really see the point in independent schools, unless it's specifically a religious school that only focuses on that religion
@9H5KWB31yr1Y
No, we should focus on improving our public school systems but we should not have to increase the teachers wages but provide better teachers and teach the teachers what they need to be succesful.
@9H5KSRP1yr1Y
They have a higher education rate, but doesn't have the best social environment for younger children.
@9GSN4DR1yr1Y
Instead of that public schools should have some extra classes and lessons which is needed for immigrants or students who believe in different religious.
@9GH2KFF1yr1Y
No. They interfere with the education of our children and teach dangerous new ideas that weaken society and our country.
@9FLZ7NR1yr1Y
i dont even know what it is
@9FL4DDJ1yr1Y
@9FKS3241yr1Y
I think it is okay to have a balance of both but have more public.
@9FKMM2T1yr1Y
Only if the if curriculum is managed by the same governmental body that manages public education of the region
@9FBPK491yr1Y
Yes I do support them, don’t have any problems with them, but I do not think that they should change all schools into private schools
@9F8XHMZ1yr1Y
We should imrpove our public schools, and education should not be privatized
@9F8R89M1yr1Y
yes because some of the teaching styles could be more helpful to some children
@9F85VKC1yr1Y
i think that there are pros and cons to everything.
@9F85RMJ1yr1Y
Not against it, neither I support it.
@B2R4LF91mo1MO
The public system does not serve the students with Learning Disabilities well enough. Public funding should be provided for private schools that support students with learning disabilities.
@9ZGPP6M4mos4MO
That depends on the "independent school" case and point do I agree with say for examples residential schools then no
@9WYDMSD4mos4MO
If they are non profit its a non issue, but we must focus on improving public schools and increasing teacher wages and improving our curriculums instead.
@9WBRK8D5mos5MO
No, we need to invest those funds into supporting the diverse range of needed student support and support personnel in the public system.
@9W8LXZM5mos5MO
Tuition should always be free, but people should be able to get the education they want. Funding should not be taken away from public schools.
@9VWD32S5mos5MO
A single strong public system, no subsidizing Catholic schools. Option to divert tax dollars to private/parochial schools.
@9VKMP3G5mos5MO
It is important to improve public schools and increase teacher wages, but I also support independent schools and the resources that it gives to people who send their children to them.
@9VDFPG45mos5MO
I do support independent schools, but we must improve public ones, for children who cant have pritave education life, better.
@9TR533J6mos6MO
There should always be a certain level of government framing in independent education, the school program should be reviewed to see if it respects the public education’s values
@9TQFC7D6mos6MO
In an ideal world it would not imply a scholastic hierarchy as it is not about intelligence and more about economical status.
@9TPCYM26mos6MO
We need to eliminate political bias in our schools so that public schools are actually about learning valuable skills
@9T98NNNConservative6mos6MO
I do not support independent schools. Unless of course they are for religious purposes. Otherwise, I want it all to be public because then the rich would be forced to invest in public schools to collectively improve the education for all children.
@9QZCYDN8mos8MO
Yes but they have to be privately funded and they must follow the provincial and federal standards for education
@9MX2TPB10mos10MO
Only if they are available to all potential students and absolutely not, if they are based on religious proclivities.
I believe that supporting independent schools are good, as long as they teach what is best for that particular subject, and that it is a good subject that should be learned about more.
@9M7TXTX10mos10MO
No, we should not privatize education and we should focus on improving our public schools and increasing teacher wages instead
@9LCZJZZ11mos11MO
I believe that independent schools are for the people that want to be there. There is no "right or wrong" way to teach. It would depend on what the students need. However, these vast learning styles are still not being accommodated. Schools should focus more on their students.
@9KW57GR12mos12MO
Independent schools meeting all regulations can be approved as long as there are numerous choices and its publics choice to choose what
@9KN53CC1yr1Y
Not at the expense of funding public schools and we should focus on improving our public schools and increasing teacher wages instead
i dont really care, i think private schools and public schools should be equally fuded if can and focus on the education of students, any problems of bullying if there are any, and paying teachers well
@9JMLBY51yr1Y
Canadian independant schools provide a higher standard of education than public schools. We should not support foreign schools in Canada that attract and educate foreign students.
@9JM4DK31yr1Y
yes in a way but we should focus on improving our public schools and increasing teacher and staff wages
@9JK53DW1yr1Y
The entire school system needs a revamp teachers deserve more and so do the students they are the future period
@9J73G5HConservative1yr1Y
Depends on what they would be teaching at the school, would they be held to the same standard as every other school board?
@9D8HKKMLibertarian2yrs2Y
Yes - they should be able to have their own curriculum and with no funding/oversight by government.
@9D62G5M2yrs2Y
I support increased independence of schools but, I do not think that schools should be entirely independent and should still receive funding from the government.
@9F5KMPV1yr1Y
No, education should be public. Every child and teenager should have access to free, quality public education.
@9F37DQB2yrs2Y
Yes, and we should bring schools to a high standard of practical education, teacher wages and student support.
Only if their not religious. we should focus on improving our public schools and increasing teacher wages.
@9DRKX5G2yrs2Y
I never used to be for private school, but seeing the difference between my friends children who went to public school vs private school is very eye opening. Every private school young adult is thriving, they do better under pressure, they handled covid better, the have more ambition. My friends with public school kids have young adults that are lost and flailing in life. I now think I’ll put my kids in private school.
@9DDB3M22yrs2Y
I dont support them, but dont mind them either. But I also think, everybody has a right to a education regardless.
@8MTRMBS4yrs4Y
Depends on what they’re teaching
@9CLJFYR2yrs2Y
Yes, for now. But more focus should be given to increasing the quality of public schools so that parents do not feel the need to send their child(ren) to a private school in order for that/those child/children to get a decent equation.
@9CLFQKX2yrs2Y
what exactly is an independent school?
@9C4WP962yrs2Y
I support the fact that it an option.
@9BNBM592yrs2Y
No, education should not be privatized, and we should focus on improving public schools and teacher wages instead
@9BLDQVZ2yrs2Y
There should only be privatized education for those who NEED a privatized education, otherwise it’s mainly upper class students who don’t necessarily need to get a privatized education who are enrolled in them.
@99XQJVX2yrs2Y
Yes and No. Education from K-12 ought to be top-tier teaching, nationwide. There need not be private vs public education -- that is ludacris. All students ought to receive a whole & diverse education.
@99JRF9C2yrs2Y
What are independent schools
@96RTBYZ2yrs2Y
Schools need more acknowledgment of complex historical events Canada has taken place in and the world
@96LZ6W7New Democratic2yrs2Y
Yes, but they should be monitered and should not recive the majority of funding
@96HP2BL2yrs2Y
Depends on what they are teaching and what they do. It should at least cover up the content taught in public and schools that are recognized.
@96HJ2SS2yrs2Y
Whats independant school
@96GDG65New Democratic2yrs2Y
it is not relevant to me
@96FFFDS2yrs2Y
i support rape of animals and children
@96D9GTS2yrs2Y
@96D8MBBConservative2yrs2Y
yes if they stop everything from becoming woke.
@96D85B22yrs2Y
yes because people would have a better education
@96BXTLR2yrs2Y
Independent schools should still remain open; however, this should not result in a lack of funding for public schools.
@96934R52yrs2Y
Yes but only if privately funded
yes, if they are not getting more then the public schools.
@95QK3SN2yrs2Y
Yes, but public schools should have better rules in place, and become a better place in general.
@95LYCML2yrs2Y
As long as students are learning everything they need, it's alright.
@95K5YQG2yrs2Y
No. Independent schools/school choice programs come at a great cost to our public school system, and we need to be investing more in public schools, rather than those who jack up tuition for kids to attend.
@95DQ67S2yrs2Y
What the heck is an independant school?
@95CV59P2yrs2Y
I don't really have an opinion on this matter
