Should a politician, who has been formerly convicted of a crime, be allowed to run for office?
Yes, as long as they pass a psychological examination, and have been determined unlikely to offend again.

Should non-violent prisoners be released from jail in order to reduce overcrowding?
Yes, and the government should offer opportunities to them to prevent the need to commit crimes in the future. Desperation begets crime.
