Canada has a legal obligation enshrined in its constitution to support and foster the well-being of Indigenous communities - this is a fact of law, not a matter of political debate. Further, as Canada, through direct discrimination and paternal control over Indigenous communities, Canada is responsible for much of the hardship Indigenous peoples face and therefore, Canada has a moral obligation in addition to a legal one to ensure Indigenous communities are given tools for self-government and to thrive.
