If we were to theoretically allow Catholicism we would have to allow all religions, or at least all major ones. Religions are complex and are bound to have different policies than other religions, with that in mind it eliminates the possibility of any religion. Furthermore keeping it the same for everyone gives people a base level to grow their complex religions off of. When everyone feels a unification on a base level it is significantly easier to create equal laws and things along those lines.
