there should be more restrictions to guns and i feel like people should have a gun only if they are really well trained and have to really really defend themselves and have taken lessons with these type of weapons

 @9FGFQD3from Michigan  disagreed…2yrs2Y

Gun control should be focused on preventing crimes. Often times the people who obtain guns are not recognized as being criminals, or have a significant mental illness. Additionally, many people who commit gun crimes obtain their weapons illegally. Therefore the best approach to this issue is the limit number of guns available in general.

 @9FDK5DRNew Democraticfrom Newfoundland  disagreed…2yrs2Y

there should be a permit and clearance if you have a gun also you can only have a gun that knows how to use it

 @9FGQ95GConservativefrom Alberta  disagreed…2yrs2Y

Criminals and mentally ill are the two people who should not be able to buy a gun. It can be for safety in the right hands.

 @9H7ZR6Hfrom Ontario  disagreed…1yr1Y

gun control should be focused on keeping crimes away. if you own a gun you should be licenced and know how to use it safely

 @9FKS35Nfrom Alberta  disagreed…2yrs2Y

Even if someone isn't mentally ill or on drugs, it doesn't make them any safer when weilding a gun and nothing is stopping people from shooting up a place and killing a bunch of people. stuff ;like that can still occur even when a person is sane

 @9FDKCN3from British Columbia  disagreed…2yrs2Y

There should be more restrictions for everyone when it comes to position of gun control no matter who it is.

 @9F85KSFfrom Alberta  disagreed…2yrs2Y

there 100% should be more restrictions on gun control. its so easy to buy and purchase a gun its scary

 @9F8CCTCfrom Alberta  disagreed…2yrs2Y

Buying a gun, contrary to popular belief, is not easy. To suggest that Canada, of all places, has lax gun control, is laughable. Even to get a non-restricted firearm (hunting rifles, shotguns, etc.) one must have a PAL, and getting one can take months. Getting a restricted firearm (handguns, etc.) is even harder, requiring you to pass a safety course. So no, it is not “easy” to get a gun in Canada.

 @9FDFY3NConservativefrom British Columbia  disagreed…2yrs2Y

i think that people who haven't committed a crime or are mentally ill shouldn't have a position on gun control.

 @9FFSJNVfrom Alberta  disagreed…2yrs2Y

Even if people are not mentally ill, they may have people who they do not get along with and use a gun on them.

 @9FBCV6MConservativefrom Ontario  disagreed…2yrs2Y

There should be way more restrictions to buy a gun there’s should be zero school shooting in United States

 @9FVVVR5from Ontario  agreed…2yrs2Y

Though I feel like this stance can be more offenseive, it is true that criminals and the mentally ill can be more dangerous when handling a firearm compared to a regular responsible gun owner.

 @9ZTCTM8from Alberta  disagreed…4mos4MO

Gun control in this way doesn't account for a person's potential to commit these crimes with guns.

Stopping only criminals and mentally ill is only a half measure and doesn't actually get to the root of problem. It only stops those who have committed crimes from continuing to commit crimes.

A really fix is stopping crimes from initially occuring as well.

Engaged Gun Control

Criminal Acquisition of Guns: A significant portion of gun crimes is committed with firearms obtained illegally. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, about 80% of firearms used in crimes were obtained through illegal means. This suggests that stricter regulations on law-abiding citizens may not effectively prevent gun violence.

Mental Health Considerations: Research indicates that individuals with serious mental illnesses are responsible for a small fraction of gun violence. According to a report by the National Institute of Mental Health, only about 3-5% of violent acts can be attri…  Read more

Guns should not be banned as there is no historical evidence in Canada that it increases crime. However, it is obvious that a criminal or someone struggling with mental illness should not have a gun. This poses a danger for others and themsleves.

 @9MFVHCRfrom Ontario  disagreed…11mos11MO

Arguing that gun control measures only impact criminals and the mentally ill overlooks the broader societal benefits and preventive aspects of such regulations. While it's true that these measures primarily target specific groups, they also serve to prevent firearms from falling into the wrong hands in the first place. By implementing comprehensive background checks, waiting periods, and red flag laws, we can reduce the risk of gun-related crimes, accidents, and suicides, benefiting entire communities. Gun control isn't solely about addressing individual behaviour but also about promoting community safety and responsible gun ownership.

 @9LZ9ZMNfrom Ontario  agreed…11mos11MO

some argue that strict gun control laws may not necessarily lead to a decrease in gun-related crimes. This is because criminals often obtain guns illegally,

 @9LSRPPTfrom Ontario  disagreed…12mos12MO

my counter argument is, first off equality, but also youre not a criminal until you do something and giving free will over guns to everybody is dumb. just because you have a mental health issue or illness doe not mean you should be treated so differently and anyone is at rink when owning a gun.

 @9JVS56Sfrom British Columbia  disagreed…1yr1Y

what if a dangerous person has no records prior to buyig the gun? Wouldn't it still be as dangerous?

 @9H24DFZfrom Ontario  agreed…1yr1Y

Because like i said, A criminal or mentally ill person will not care about any gun law or restrictions before shooting a school up. It will only prevent normal people from accessing these weapons.

 @9FM2MJ9from Alberta  disagreed…2yrs2Y

allowing criminals and mentally ill citizens to be able to own dangerous weapons may cause our danger rate to increase, as well as the possibility for our country to turn into the United States

 @9FK38J2from Ontario  disagreed…2yrs2Y

I think that criminals and the mentally I’ll shouldn’t be in position of guns, additionally, regulations for possessions of funds should also be more enforced

 @9LQFYB7from Georgia  disagreed…12mos12MO

all criminals and mentally ill people were just people at some point, so whats stopping a normal person who easily got access to a gun to become a criminal or develop a mental illness.

 @9FH39G5from Ontario  agreed…2yrs2Y

Criminals and the mentally I’ll have a higher risk factor when handling firearms compared to a regular responsible gun owner.

 @9LQPV4V from Ontario  disagreed…12mos12MO

You can't tell if someone will end up being a criminal or not. You could be giving a gun to a criminal without even knowing it.

 @9F8WCLBfrom Alberta  disagreed…2yrs2Y

i dont think that people should have guns a part from the people that are trusted by the government. but not anyone.

 @9FH8KMZ from Ontario  disagreed…2yrs2Y

As a employee of security industry, gun crimes are not always performed by people involved in criminal activity and mental health illness.

 @9GMR4FHfrom Ontario  disagreed…1yr1Y

there should be a permit and clearance if you have a gun also you can only have a gun that knows how to use it

 @9GJGK5Qfrom Ontario  disagreed…1yr1Y

people should have a gun only if they are well trained, have to defend themselves, and have taken lessons with these types of weapons before. So i do think there should be more restrictions on the current process of purchasing a gun.

 @9G5HCMQfrom Alberta  disagreed…1yr1Y

the only people who should have the right to guns are military veterans to perhaps be reminded of war and indigenous to get that sense of childhood and past again

 @9F5J5B7from Ontario  disagreed…2yrs2Y

There should be more restrictions on the current process of purchasing a gun for the whole society, not only for criminals and the mentally ill. There is an increase in gun related crime among different ages and social groups. Gun violence becomes a serious issue which affects everyone in the community. There should be strict regulations to strengthen gun control in Canada and prevent crime which affects public safety.
