Governments can use the courts as a weapon against their political opponents. E.g. a) Russia's Putin frames his opponents. b) Nelson Mandela was sentenced to life imprisonment. A Canadian Prime-minister or Premier, can be 'removed from office' by a vote of no confidence; similar to American impeachment. There are democratic safeguards.
