Why? Because in order to lower Global Emissions, we need a collective solution to reduce overall output of emissions, developing countries need access to natural gas. Asian manufacturers have been using coal in their factories, and given they produce the world with most of our produced items, giving them the option to buy Canadian Natural Gas , and move away from coal.
The reduction in emissions from creating lithium based batteries that fill our subsidized electric cars would truly make them a lower carbon footprint than any Petro based car.
