No, police should instead be trained to respond in non-violent situations in order to mitigate police issues

 @8Q2GXXRfrom Pennsylvania  agreed…4yrs4Y

Agreed. The main counter-argument with this is that cops get paid highly and it wastes their time. If you consider those social workers are paid around 15k less per year than cops, and if this was implemented, cops would be paid 15k higher a year for their additional abilities to control violent mentally ill patients better and considering that social workers would have to call the cops anyways in that situation, you are actually saving money!

 @8NS88GDfrom British Columbia  answered…4yrs4Y

No, give police departments should be given more training but some increased funding should still be given to community based programs.

 @8PQMR6HLiberalfrom Ontario  answered…4yrs4Y

Yes, redirect SOME funding toward better social programs for non-violent offences.

 @8H6JLM3from Quebec  answered…5yrs5Y

Yes, reduce the police budget and allocate police evenly across the city. Put funds into stopping sex trafficking, gun violence, etc. Stop over policing some areas over others.

 @9SNLZ3Sfrom British Columbia  answered…8mos8MO

The police should be replaced and led by uncorrupted and non racist individuals to avoid police brutality and racism, instead of playing to white supremacy.

 @9RNN5KTNew Democraticfrom Alberta  answered…9mos9MO

Keep police funding the same as it is now and eliminate budget raises. Use the money that would go to raising police budgets to fund community safety and crime prevention programs.

 @9KYB6X7from Alberta  answered…1yr1Y

This should be a blended approach. Increase social programs but not at the cost of police, until the benefits have taken effect

 @9FNVPXZfrom Alberta  answered…2yrs2Y

The government needs to smarten up and be financially responsible. This includes putting importance on both police and social programming with the goal of crime reduction. This isn't rocket science.

 @967LCLVfrom Quebec  answered…3yrs3Y

Redirect police funds for better training to prevent violence, as well as saving some funds for community based programmes

 @964KCWMGreenfrom Prince Edward Island  answered…3yrs3Y

 @94FZFL6from British Columbia  answered…3yrs3Y

keep it the same and find other funds for community based programs as well.

 @927WQGJfrom Ontario  answered…3yrs3Y

No, funding should be increased to include alternative response methods. In GB and other countries, first responders don't have guns. Several teams intervene before armed response. And increase funding to community programs like mental health initiatives and youth counselling as prevention.

 @8Z3CLLLfrom Ontario  answered…3yrs3Y

 @8YP7H5Mfrom Ontario  answered…3yrs3Y

increase funding for police and social services, as well as strengthen police training on social problems

 @8YNNHM2Liberalfrom Ontario  answered…3yrs3Y

Continue the funding but limit it and redirect them for community needs.

 @8YMXWD7from British Columbia  answered…3yrs3Y

the police should get more funding fo better training especially in racial bias.

 @8YL8VP2from Quebec  answered…3yrs3Y

Train police in dealing with mental health issues when encountering the public

 @8VS85NMNew Democraticfrom British Columbia  answered…4yrs4Y

Reallocate funding for more desecalation training and mental health training

 @8VRQPFLfrom British Columbia  answered…4yrs4Y

 @8VRH67Tfrom Ontario  answered…4yrs4Y

Change finding allocation: more to training and far far less to arming them and new vehicles and the like. Leftover funds towards community based responders

 @8VP6D8Mfrom Alberta  answered…4yrs4Y

Put more funding in mental health approaches and training for police officers

 @8VN2DTDfrom Manitoba  answered…4yrs4Y

 @8VLSN7Pfrom British Columbia  answered…4yrs4Y

We need people in our society that are willing to deal with violent people. More training for police on how to deal with mental health would help in my eye.

 @8VGYRYLfrom Ontario  answered…4yrs4Y

Police should receive more training but the government should also be putting more money into social and community based programs.

 @8VGVTB9from Ontario  answered…4yrs4Y

Increase funding and training for police departments around the country and also redirect some funding towards social and crisis based forces trained to deal with certain situations

 @8VG9KRWfrom Ontario  answered…4yrs4Y

No but change the policing system to handle non violent and violent people/situations better.

 @8VBSZ5XLiberalfrom Alberta  answered…4yrs4Y

They should increase education requirements for police and have more vetting of them as well as increase funding for community programs

 @8V7GV6Jfrom British Columbia  answered…4yrs4Y

 @8V7CSFRfrom Ontario  answered…4yrs4Y

Some, but I still think funding is important to our service members. Adequate training, and more support systems for non-violent crime and mental health is a middle ground I think could help.

 @8V6CDL5New Democraticfrom Ontario  answered…4yrs4Y

They should lower funding for certain departments and increase funding to programs to solve underlying issues we need both police and programs

 @8V585ZZfrom Prince Edward Island  answered…4yrs4Y

Redirect some funding but not all. Social workers do not get paid enough.

 @8TYLQ6VConservativefrom British Columbia  answered…4yrs4Y

Fund the police but also have a mental health unit or medical persons to be involved

 @8TWQGZFfrom Ontario  answered…4yrs4Y

Maintain their funding but divert wellness checks and suicide threats to mental health workers to relieve some workload on the officers.

 @8TTG8T7from Ontario  answered…4yrs4Y

Both are equally important. The police can help solve problems when it’s too late to turn back, but social resources can aid people in getting help and prevent them from resorting to crime in the first place.

 @8TGSHWTfrom Alberta  answered…4yrs4Y

More funding should be allocated do proper mental health support can be used but not all finding

 @8T6YJTCfrom Ontario  answered…4yrs4Y

More substantial background and mental stability checks to become a police officer.

 @8T5NZR6from Ontario  answered…4yrs4Y

Make the police also have a psychology background/education. To better equip them to descalate the situation.

 @8T3JDCMfrom Ontario  answered…4yrs4Y

There should be better balance to find the spending that reduces crime the most

 @8SXKXWCGreenfrom Alberta  answered…4yrs4Y

Only partially. There are benefits to more social and community programs and less police, but not no police.

 @8SSLDBWfrom Ontario  answered…4yrs4Y

fund the police less but still keep them and fund the social services more

 @8SPJKZFfrom Ontario  answered…4yrs4Y

More police training, crisis training and psychological checks, also hold police accountable and have bigger consequences for using lethal force unless in extreme high risk cases.

 @8SN9TV4from Ontario  answered…4yrs4Y

 @8SL99XNfrom Ontario  answered…4yrs4Y

No, but reform of police and increased accountability and funding + training to train officers to not use excessive, unneeded force.

 @8SJ5BDVfrom Ontario  answered…4yrs4Y

No, instead the funding should be distributed better, to allow for an improvement in the training of police officers.

 @8S42FF5from Ontario  answered…4yrs4Y

I believe the police should get what ever funding they need to retrain and rework their system from stopping fight/crimes to preventing and deescalating.

 @8RG6SG3from Ontario  answered…4yrs4Y

I feel that police need more training and testing. But also they should be more restricted on thier funds.

 @8QLJMM2from Ontario  answered…4yrs4Y

Once there's more gun control in the USA, the police should receive lower funds and have less weaponry. The lower access guns there are in the States would most likely lower the access to guns in Canada. Therefore, there wouldn't be a need to have weapons on police all the time.

 @8PPY29Hfrom Ontario  answered…4yrs4Y

Social and community based programs need more funding, but I also think the police do. People want change in the police force, and they need money to do that. Hire people that actually know what they’re doing, to be properly educated, have more people that specialize in actually HELPING people.

 @8PKD9TDfrom Ontario  answered…4yrs4Y
