I think 18-year-olds should contribute one year of service to their country, but not just through a military service. There should be options such as internships in international and inter-provincial gov't service, building houses for orgs such as Habitat for Humanity, or in the peace corps building wells and solar energy hubs, anything that contributes to the well-being of our society.

You want to collect welfare?, then mandatory 1 year in military service, earn your paycheck, or you get nothing

 @9GNXXXTfrom British Columbia  answered…1yr1Y

No, we don't need it for now. It's not World War I or II, thankfully. Nor are we in a conflict zone with an aggressive power.

 @B323KF9from British Columbia  answered…2mos2MO

Not a year but have to attend like a workshop for like a month that teaches the basic and the importance of the Miitary

 @B2LW3DQfrom British Columbia  answered…2mos2MO

Yes, but other options such as the environment, education, community support should be included-service to the country or community.

 @9WKLBWBfrom British Columbia  answered…6mos6MO

Yes, but focus more on public service. the military should take an important role in education especially in high schools to prepare citizens for careers and build skills for our youth to ensure their success.

 @9T6K3DXfrom British Columbia  answered…7mos7MO

No, service should be a choice instead of an obligation. Also focus less on military training and focus more on education and skill development.

 @9JLF2GLfrom British Columbia  answered…1yr1Y

a 2-4 month mandatory military training for all men age's between 18 - 35 would be a good idea incase of war but not outright serves.

 @92NSVSPfrom British Columbia  answered…3yrs3Y

No, not every civilian should have to serve in the military. I realize that I am privileged saying this, as many countries such as Finland and South Korea require it, to defend against Russia and North Korea. But in an ideal world, service should be a choice instead of an obligation.

  @8TXVXMLfrom British Columbia  answered…4yrs4Y

Perhaps 17 or 18 would ideal for a 1 year non-warzone mandatory training.

 @8PNCCBWfrom British Columbia  answered…4yrs4Y

yes but only those with a growing criminal record and no allergies/ compromised immune system

 @8P939QDfrom British Columbia  answered…4yrs4Y

No, service should be a choice instead of an obligation. Also all leader should have attended a min of 4 years to be a leader in our country

 @8NYFJXSfrom British Columbia  answered…4yrs4Y

Yes, but it should be 2 or 3 years served in any civil service, National, Provincial or Municipal and served out at a chosen time of life, early entry level, mid term supervisory or later in Senior management

 @8MXCPH9from British Columbia  answered…4yrs4Y

Not specifically military, but some service such as firefighting, or a subsidized daycare center or geriatric assistance. The military stands for things people should not be forced to believe in, but community has many levels and the value of serving a community should be instilled in young adults.

 @8JBB4L9from British Columbia  answered…4yrs4Y

Some form of service or volunteerism should be an option for any citizen in exchange for skills training and/or a free education.

 @8HF7WC8from British Columbia  answered…5yrs5Y

I believe that the military is imperialist and should slowly be taken apart and have its budget distributed to other programs. I do believe in conscription but should be into a customer service role to teach respect for workers and basic human decency

 @98699X9from British Columbia  answered…2yrs2Y

Yes and no military support jobs should be required along with greater first hand eduction of what our military does for us

 @95DH7PGfrom British Columbia  answered…3yrs3Y

Service should be a choice instead of an obligation. Though I realize that this is not always possible depending on where you live in the world (South Korea, Finland, etc.)

 @94C42JLfrom British Columbia  answered…3yrs3Y

No, service should be a choice instead of an obligation. But, I realize that I am in a privileged position to be able to say that. It's not uncommon for many young men in regions of the world such as Eastern Europe (Ukraine, Finland) the Middle East (Israel) and Southeast Asia (South Korea) to have mandatory military service as part of being a citizen, but I hope it never comes to the point where Canada-US relations become that strained and adversarial.

 @93HJWN4Conservativefrom British Columbia  answered…3yrs3Y

No, but all mentally and physically fit and capable should be required to join.

 @93FG53Gfrom British Columbia  answered…3yrs3Y

Service should be a choice instead of an obligation, and I'm lucky to say this as I know that in countries like Finland and South Korea, it's mandatory for everyone to serve in the military.

 @8VK3QDYfrom British Columbia  answered…4yrs4Y

 @8V8L4X3from British Columbia  answered…4yrs4Y

Yes, but exempt criminals or kids with troubled pass. Paid service to fund their future education.

 @8V4VMLCfrom British Columbia  answered…4yrs4Y

 @8CCZXDPfrom British Columbia  answered…5yrs5Y

HELL NO!

Some people are unfit for military service, first of all, and forced service of any kind is not okay. No teens are forced to volunteer, or do community service unless as a form of punishment. No one is forced to go to Post-Secondary. Just... don't "require" anyone to be put in any kind of job okay? Is that fine? To not force any young people to assimilate in a disciplinary structure whose aim is to promote nationalism but rather causes massive distrust in the nation that they did not choose to serve?

Cool? Cool.

 @98X6QZYfrom British Columbia  answered…2yrs2Y

No, but every 18 year old should be obliged to provide one year of public service which may include the military

 @98FPFSYLiberalfrom British Columbia  answered…2yrs2Y

It varies depending on where you are/given time context. It's maybe not a priority for Canadians now, because we aren't really in a conflict with other nations. But in South Korea, Ukraine, Israel as well as Finland? They need it to survive as a nation as they have aggressive neighbours around them that threaten their existence.

 @Jatzuyufrom British Columbia  answered…4yrs4Y

Canada's population is low compared to other countries, if there was a war we may not have enough people, even 1 year of military service is gives you enough battlefield knowledge.

 @9ZK3JNSfrom British Columbia  answered…5mos5MO

Yes, but a minimum of a year starting at the age of 16 lasting until age 20 to get a guaranteed basic income and a quarter million dollar old age pension plan. The focus should be skill development and education and the reinforcement of public services such as police, EMS and Fire Fighting/disaster relief. this will also be where we build local militias to be on stand by at all times.
