For example, religious minorities in theocratic countries like Christians in Saudi Arabia, Hindus in Bhutan, and Jews in every Christian or Muslim country in which they have resided throughout history have faced daily repression for their beliefs and culture. A theocratic society at its core is hostile to diversity and independence of thought. It alienates and punishes its residents and citizens who profess a non-official faith, which can range from lack of political representation, inequality in funding for religious institutions, to even the banning of non-official religions and ethnic cleansing. Furthermore, irreligious people can be pressured to pretend to profess a faith which they do not, or risk facing many of the same inequities as minoritized religious groups.
