How important is it for political entities to take a stand on international issues that may not directly affect their immediate constituents?

I think it's fine for the government to make statements on international issues, understanding that there is a large amount of diplomacy involved. Although I don't have a lot of faith in politicians to write good policy, because they rely too much on ideological politics, and not on experts opinions, I do trust their abilities in being diplomats.
