It needs to be implemented gradually, too. In many countries single payer system decentivizes medical workers and innovation and does not reward those that convert to a healthier lifestyle (disease prevention). Medical workers (doctors, nurses, healthcare professionals, support workers like housekeeping) are underpaid and overworked - only a very few anymore make the 'big money'. People are leaving and retiring - burnout and suicide has increased. Very few people have no access to healthcare - indigent care clinics exist in every town and nonprofits help with routine meds. Many of my patients just don't take their meds or keep their appointments - by their own choice and they falsely use the excuse they couldn't afford it.
